As you may know, I have been working on a sustainable solution for Zambia’s fuelwood industry for many years. I was even summoned to the State House during President Banda’s term in office to explain my concept to him. He was very impressed and agreed that it was the way forward, but he also told me that the people of Zambia would never go for such an idea. He believed that citizens should be allowed to harvest trees for fuelwood to cook and for warmth as is their right. However, things have changed. Overcutting forests has become a primary concern, spurred on by changing climates. This concept would help in the fight against the desertification of Zambia. Remember, it will get a lot worse as time goes on. He was very impressed and agreed that it was the way forward, but he also told me that the people of Zambia would never go for such an idea. Fuelwood will play a huge role in alleviating the use of electricity until a solution can be found to the problem of supplying electricity to the households of rural Zambia.
